Genmaicha was originally crafted in Japan centuries ago, when the common folks were eager to drink tea but could not afford it. They started blending in roasted brown rice kernels to the little green tea that they had, and a new tea was created. Brown rice tea or Genmaicha has a roasted smoky earthy flavor from the rice that compliments the grassy green tea flavor.
